The Enchanting Walled Citadel of Wat Phra That Lampang Luang: A Journey Through Time

Located approximately 20 kilometers from Lampang, Wat PhraThat Lampang Luang is a historic temple of great significance. Situated on a man-made mound of earth, this walled citadel was built on the site of an eighth-century fortification, called a wiang, that once guarded the routes to Lampang. Despite its fortress-like appearance, the temple buildings seen today were built in the fifteenth century, and are known for their relatively pure state.

Unlike many modern temples in Chiang Mai, Wat Phra That Lampang Luang has not been updated or altered to conform to contemporary Thai ideas about temples. The courtyard is still filled with sand, and the massive main wiharn (prayer hall) is still open on all sides, giving visitors an authentic glimpse of ancient temple architecture. The entrance to the temple is guarded by a pair of imposing lion statues, and visitors must climb the naga stairway to access the massive main gate.

Inside the temple, visitors will find a range of fascinating structures, including the main prayer hall, the Wiharn Luang, which stands close to the entrance. The wiharn is open on all four sides and features sturdy columns adorned with black lacquer and gold leaf designs. The gilded 'ku' containing the main Buddha image is also located in this hall. At the back of the Wiharn Luang, visitors can see a massive gilded ku, a sort of Laotian prang that shelters the main Buddha image, the Phra Chao Lang Thong, cast in 1563.

Additional highlights of the temple include the 45-meter-tall chedi, which has somehow escaped the gilding that is now universally applied to chedis, and the 400-year-old scripture library that is well worth a visit. The temple's two museums, which house various artifacts and exhibits, are not as interesting, but still worth a quick visit. Overall, Wat Phra That Lampang Luang is a must-visit attraction for those interested in ancient temple architecture and the rich history of Lampang.
